This blog is formatted to allow for discussion of Eric Jensen's book on poverty. Each participant may enter reflections in the comment section of Chapter 1, then on the following three headings found in chapters 2-6: 1) Theory & Research 2) Action Steps 3) High Poverty Schools Making it Happen, in the comment sections of each chapter.
These are my thoughts as I read through this chapter, will keep things straight in my mind when we get to discuss it as a group soon: • Narrow down a list of school wide goals (don't take on too much at once) pg 69 • Survey kids, know their real life concerns and try to meet them pg 70 - 71 • Formative assessments: ongoing, purposeful and customized to our school pg 75 • Survey teachers (survey monkey?): How are we doing?; To what degree are we serving all the students?; What are we good at and where do we need help? • Find out about Title students: what is their knowledge base; learning styles; assistance needed; projected learning outcomes; (((how do these answers change my teaching))) pg 77 • We “cannot afford to put a student down or treat them unfairly”! pg 82 • Admin: Increase teacher responsibility; Value the teachers; Redesign teaching roles pg 84, 85 • Build relationships in staff & students pg 86 • Survey students (change 360 Survey to be something meaningful) pg 93 • Treat students with respect to build relationships pg 93 • Foster intellectual curiosity; emotional engagement; social bonding pg 94 • (( Title 1 kids often come to class hungry – have healthy snacks on hand to eat)) pg97 • Work to improve the climate in the school pg 100 – 105 (decide what to change and just do it)
